Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea, 2016-2018

From my service in the Republic of Korea, I had the most vibrant learning experience of my life — both professionally and personally.

Professionally, I learned and experienced, first-hand, what a complex strategic environment really looks like — and then from that environment, how operational and tactical decisions can impact the environment (and vice versa). I learned and witnessed what excellence at the operational level of war really looked like — it was modeled over and over again by US and ROK senior leadership in our vibrant exercise regimen. I learned about the power of strategic communication — and the criticality of alignment in that communication (horizontally and vertically). I learned what it means to invest in interoperability — and saw the positive readiness dividend that ensued. Through my Navy lens, I learned that success really is about ships — friend-ships, partner-ships, and relation-ships, woven together through thoughtful, empathetic and passionate leader-ship.

Personally, I lived in Busan in a high-rise apartment. My wife and I were the only Americans in the apartment complex and our Navy contingent in Busan was quite small relative to the other components on the Peninsula. That said, by living “on the economy,” my wife and I got to really learn, know and appreciate Korean culture. We fell in love with the Korean people — their warmth, humor, kindness and family-centered selflessness is unique and uplifting. We made lifelong friends with many Koreans during our tour and look forward to maintaining close contact with them for decades to come.

I consider my service in the Republic of Korea from 2016-2018 to be a great life privilege and eagerly look forward to a return to the Peninsula. Katchi Hanghae Hapshida (“We Sail Together”)
