February 10, 2021 at 3:58 amI had a similar scenario back on 18 August 1976. I was working in Seoul for the J-2, Combined Intelligence Center as the Side Looking Airborn RADAR Imagery Analyst. I saw the news report of the PANMUNJOM AXE MURDERS on AFKN News at 6PM and got the call to report to the bunker ASAP. I was informed that I would be working the Side Looking Airborn RADAR missions, which would be 24/7 or until. I worked 5 missions a day for 10 days and a reduced number for 3 more days. I had no idea what the specific returns on the imagery were (all I had was black and white ground with black dots. I could plot the returns on my maps as the roads were shown on the imagery along with terrain. I had no idea what it was – as we said it could be attashe on a bike with a stack of pans or military vehicles. The system was basically an early warning device. We could make out direction of travel with enough time, which we did not have (but mission after mission of the same area we could give a GOOD direction) and where most of the traffic was in relation to the DMZ. After 28 August the flights were reduced due to flight crew limitations (crew rest) and things settled down.
