This journal is in honor of Korean War Veterans — stories/articles about KWVs are encouraged.

The digital journal features stories and articles by KDVA members and supporters of the ROK-U.S. Alliance. It allows our members and supporters a way to voice their expertise and opinions that add to discussions about the Alliance.

The journal will go to our members, our partner organizations, potential sponsors, Alliance experts in the ROK and U.S. governments, and U.S. and ROK think tanks.

Submission Guidelines: 

• Articles can be submitted in English and Korean.
• Topic areas are: 
  • Korean War and Korea Defense Veterans
  • Security and Strategy
  • Korean and American Culture
  • Serving in Korea
  • ROK – U.S. Alliance
• Articles should be less than 1,500 words, 1,000 words if submitting photos for your article.
• If your article is longer, please indicate what parts you would like us to publish and provide a link or contact info where our readers can get the full article or story.
• If providing photos, please provide photo captions and photo credits. Photos should be sent in separate attachments and be in jpg. or png. format.

Position/Title: Accounting and Program Assistant (APA)

The Korea Defense Veterans Association (KDVA), a nonprofit organization based in northern Virginia, is looking for an experienced, reliable, and task-oriented part-time Accounting and Program Assistant (APA) who will be responsible for assisting with accounting responsibilities and numerous KDVA Programs such as events, chapter, and membership support. In addition, the APA will assist in operations and administrative tasks to help manage the further growth of KDVA. Position is 100% remote with a flexible work schedule.

KDVA’s mission is to enhance the Republic of Korea – United States Alliance by advocating for the Alliance and supporting the people who built and serve the Alliance.

Main Duties and Responsibilities.

Accounting Support –

• Payroll
  • Run Payroll and transfer funds to payroll account in our online banking.
  • Work with Payroll Company for issues regarding tax, state, worker’s comp, etc.
• Bank
  • Make transfers and payments as necessary.
  • Look over account weekly to make sure there aren’t any questionable charges. If there are, work with the bank to resolve them.
  • Review our accounts/credit card plans and make sure we have the best accounts for what we need.
• Work with the states for any documents or information needed.
• Assist in gathering documents for 990 and other tax related issues.
• Work with the accounting firm for budgets, financial reporting, etc.
• Track monthly/quarterly transfers.
• Obtain proper documents from vendors (1099, etc.)
• Process expense reimbursements.
• Must maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Programs Support

• Event Support – Hands on support on-site to include but not limited to setting up/breaking down venue, AV coordination, and other support functions to ensure event runs smoothly.
• Assist in membership activities (i.e., membership drives, incentive programs, inquiries from members, etc.)
• Support KDVA chapters as needed.

• Take on special projects.

Required Skills.

• Accounting background.
• Have a support mindset: Understand the work expectations of the KDVA Staff and be committed to making their work more effective.
• Excellent communication: Have clear, concise, and professional written and verbal communication skills.
• Initiative and motivation: Be a self-starter; highly responsive with excellent follow-through and follow-up; and work independently. Be resourceful and adapt to changing priorities.
• Team-minded: Be friendly, professional, and respectful in working with outside organizations.
• Strong technology competency: MS Suite, virtual meeting/conference software, etc.
• Have your own reliable computer for remote working (with web camera and antivirus software, high-speed wireless internet, and smart phone).

Preferred Skills and Experiences.

• Familiarity with Quickbooks.
• Interest in Korea, Veterans, and their Families.
• Work experience with non-profit organizations preferred.
• Worked or lived in South Korea is desirable but not required.
• A bachelor’s degree is great but not required.
• Korean speaker is a plus.
• Department of Defense or Military spouses are encouraged to apply.

Work Hours.

• Part-time position with flexible business hours, 10-12 hours a week, Monday-Friday.
• Be available to support KDVA’s events and meetings on-site in the Washington, DC area that take place outside of the workplace such as events, banquets, and conferences.

Location Requirement.

• Must reside in the Washington, DC metro area – there is no relocation expense.

Compensation Range.

• The total compensation is $15,000.
• Fifteen vacation days.
• KDVA observes all U.S. federal holidays.
• No overtime; compensation time as needed.

Announcing the KDVA Impact Scholarship Program for 2024

The Korea Defense Veterans Association whose mission is to support the ROK-U.S. Alliance and our Veterans is very proud to announce the KDVA Impact Scholarship Program for 2024.

KDVA recognizes the importance of education and the role it plays in personal, professional, and economic fulfillment.

The KDVA Impact Scholarship Program provides scholarships to KDVA members and their spouses, children, and grandchildren (including stepchildren) to help them attain their educational goals so they can continue contributing to the ROK-U.S. Alliance and supporting our Veterans. Scholarships are awarded only for coursework from accredited, tertiary institutions (colleges and trade schools).

Five scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $3,000 each.

Eligibility

1. Applicant must be a member of KDVA or the spouse, child, or grandchild (including step child) of a KDVA member.  Applicant can also be an Associate Member.
2. Applicant must be accepted into an accredited college, university, or trade school.
3. Applicant must be a high school graduate with a minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) (3.0 on 4.0 scale) to apply.

Scholarship Application – due July 8, 2024

Application materials include the application form (includes written statement of need and essay), official transcript(s), proof of matriculation at designated accredited academic institution, and list of extracurricular activities (includes leadership and community service).

The essay question is “How would you start and run a KDVA Campus Club at your school?”

SELECTION

KDVA will inform scholarship recipients by the end of July 2024.

The funds will be sent to the academic institution for documented expenses and must be used between August 2024 and July 2025. These funds may not be used for prior academic expenses.

If selected, KDVA Scholarship recipients will provide: a) a photograph and a statement for use in KDVA publications, newsletter, website, social media, and marketing materials, etc. and b) follow-up information and feedback as to how the KDVA scholarship assisted in their education for use in KDVA research and marketing.

KDVA’s 2024 2nd Quarter ROK-U.S. Alliance Journal articles are due
by May 17, 2024.

This quarter’s journal will be dedicated to Korean War Veterans and their Families. Please share your stories and articles with KDVA for this special edition!

KDVA Introduces the 1^st KDVA Campus Club

April 3, 2024

The Korea Defense Veterans Association (KDVA) is very excited to announce the 1^st KDVA Campus Club at the University of Utah, University Asia Campus (UAC), located in Incheon, South Korea.  The KDVA Campus Club is led by Club President Jewoong Hwang with support from Mr. Sunghee Kim, Assistant Professor, School of Accounting, and Mr. James Park, Director of External Relations and Alumni Affairs.  The Club members include several former and current KDVA Interns.

The UAC KDVA Campus Club is excited to bring together students with common interests to increase awareness and advocacy of the ROK-U.S. Alliance and our Veterans. With the support of KDVA, they will host Meet and Greets, Webinars, Conferences, Korean Cultural Experiences, and more.

Mr. Sunghee Kim, one of the Club Advisors said, “I am very excited that the very first KDVA Campus Club has been established at the University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC), empowering the Club to have a global setting from the beginning. The University of Utah provides students with the opportunity to become global leaders by studying in multiple nations, including South Korea. The KDVA Campus Club established at the University of Utah Asia Campus plans to extend its operations to the main campus in Salt Lake City.”

The UAC will hold its KCC Launch Meet & Greet in April.  Whether you are a KDVA member or not, you are invited – for free!  So, please look for an announcement soon.

KDVA Campus Clubs are our “Boots on the Ground” on college campuses in the United States and Korea.  KCCs support KDVA’s mission of enhancing and supporting the ROK-U.S. Alliance and our Veterans on college campuses. Anyone can start a KCC and run the Campus Club as its President.  KDVA HQ provides all the funds, social media support, and senior Alliance leaders to participate in events in person or by Zoom.  You just need to register the KCC at your school and come up with ideas for activities and events.

KDVA called for KDVA Local Chapters in the United States in August, and we are very thankful to have several volunteers.  Now, KDVA announces virtual Common Interest Groups.

Common Interest Groups (CIG) are virtual and bonded by a common interest.  For example, KDVA members could form CIGs for a KDVA-DMZ Group, KDVA-1970s Decade Group, KDVA-current and former 7AF Group, KDVA-CFC C3 Group, etc.

Members can join only one Local Chapter at a time and more than one Common Interest Group.
