James Honea is a distinguished senior executive leader who recently retired as the 16th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON), the highest enlisted position in the United States Navy. In this role, he served as the principal enlisted advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and the Secretary of the Navy, representing the interests of over 400,000 Sailors and their families. He regularly engaged with Congressional leadership, the Department of Defense, and international partners to influence defense policy, shape legislation, and strengthen global maritime security.
Prior to serving as MCPON, Honea was the Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, where he advised the Commander on the readiness, welfare, and professional development of more than 375,000 joint service members across the region. He built enduring partnerships with allied and partner nation defense leaders, advancing regional stability and interoperability.
His previous leadership assignments included Fleet Master Chief of U.S. Pacific Fleet, Command Master Chief of U.S. Fifth Fleet/Naval Forces Central Command in Bahrain, and Command Master Chief of U.S. Naval Forces Korea. Across these roles, Honea developed and executed strategic initiatives to enhance force readiness, modernize enlisted professional development, and deepen U.S. alliances in the Indo-Pacific and Middle East.
Throughout his 38 year career, Honea has been recognized as a trusted advisor, strategic communicator, and coalition builder. He has extensive experience engaging with Congress, senior Pentagon leaders, and international defense officials on critical issues of national security, defense modernization, and personnel policy. He is committed to leveraging his expertise in government affairs, defense policy, and stakeholder engagement in service to the defense industry.
